Passing Your Theory Test - My Advice

First of all you must must must practice. For anyone that has told you they passed without even practising more than likely lied - or maybe they took it many years ago. The scores you need to get on the Theory Test to pass are:

43 out of 50 on the Theory Test
44 out of 75 on the Hazard Perception Test

If you are reading online or on the App (I highly recommend the Official DVSA app) you may see something about 1 in 2 people failing the test. That seems like a lot, half of people fail this test. When I read this, I found this disheartening and figured I might end up failing the test. However, after taking the test myself I really do feel that a majority of this half of people that fail have not practised enough. On the app there are a possible 700 questions to go through, on the test you will get 50 questions. You don't need to do the maths to figure out that if you do very little work that you could end up with lots of questions you have not seen before. The questions are worded very similarly to the actual test and if you practice enough then you will more than likely pass this part of the test.

Of course don't feel disheartened if you do fail on this, the results sheet tells you the areas that you didn't do well on and you can practice these more on the app before you give it another go. It really is not designed to trip you up in anyway. There are some really stupid answers to some questions that you can rule out straight away. The app gives you the option to practice just the questions you have previously got wrong which is what I did a lot of before the test so I felt confident that these ones wouldn't let me down.

The part I didn't feel so confident on was the Hazard Perception, I found when doing the practice runs that I was clicking the hazard too soon and totally missing out on points even though I'd seen the hazard. I have to say that I spend more time on preparing for the Theory part because I saw how many different questions I might get. I should have really put some more time into the Hazard Perception. In the end, when actually doing the test I clicked when I saw a hazard and waited a second or two and clicked again. I didn't click in a pattern or anything like that but I tried to click the Hazards I did see more than once because I knew I'd been clicking too soon. I just got the pass mark on my test. But I would advise spending time on the app, if I'd missed one point I would have failed the whole test.

Do not worry about failing, this will only make you go into the test feeling like you might and probably will result in you failing. Be confident in your abilities and know that you have put the practise in before the test. If you are feeling extra nervous before the test, I would advise reading the extra information on the app about the structure of the test so you know what to expect and researching exactly where your test centre is. Sometimes they can be out of the way from public transport and you don't want to rely on transport that might be delayed. To help with this possibility, I got to the area my test centre was about an hour early and went for a hot drink. I sat in a coffee shop and did a few more practise runs. I ended up getting 3 of the questions that I'd practised that morning, including one I'd got wrong and learnt the real answer of. So that might build your confidence and help you to feel relaxed before the test.

When I got the good news the other day and it resulted in a celebration purchase. That being this pretty pretty midi dress which was a bargain £10. I have a love of a midi dress in a vintage cut or print. I have had quite a few of them over the years but some of the pieces became associated with work and I fell out of love with them. I sold some and donated a few others. This pretty piece is a replacement for those I'd gotten rid of (through an anxiety related cull). It also feels nice to have a piece in my wardrobe that is associated with something I have been successful in - positive affirmations and all that.

On the day of my test I filmed a little changing room try on which you can find here:
