Koestler Arts Exhibition 2021 - Southbank Centre
There is an art exhibition that I went to recently that I think you need to visit if you are in London this month. The exhibition, at the Southbank Centre, showcases about 200 pieces of artwork created by prisoners, secure patients and detainees. The exhibition has artwork and writing created by those that enter The Koestler Awards, this is an annual programme which gives people from the UK's criminal justice system a chance to change their life through the arts. It is a powerful selection of work.
Lots of the work has been created with very limited resources. There were sculptures made from things like toilet roll holders and matchsticks, pencil drawings on paper which spanned several pieces, intricate drawings and paintings. Beautiful illustrations and creations that my words really don't do justice. It was incredible to see the creativity, artistic skills and breadth of talent within this selection of work.
At the end you can choose your favourite pieces and leave a note for the artist about their work. These comments are taken to the people that worked so hard on the creations, paintings and drawings you've come to see. One of the people that worked at the exhibition told us that the comments on the cards they have can change people lives an save peoples lives. I picked 3 of my favourites but I already want to go back and write more.
I really do recommend going to see this exhibition yourselves if you can!
